The VMA 2016 10K Track Championships: An Evening In Black & White
The rain held off but strong winds ebbed and flowed throughout the evening, buffeting competitors as they raced to circle the track twenty-five times the fastest in the VMA 2016 10K Track Championships.
Divided into two heats, the gun went on the first at 19:00 sharp, with the last in the heat crossing the line shortly after 8pm. The faster heat kicked off shortly thereafter, with U30 Associate Members Mark Richards (20) and Henry Kiellerup (19) lapping the entire field at least twice to come in at 33:42 and 33:51, respectively. Next over the line was Michael Bishop (44) in 37:36, followed by Mike Rennie (34) in 38:04 and Campbell McLennan (43) in 38:48. Mark, Henry and Campbell are all Human Performance Development athletes, and Mike Rennie their coach. Congratulations to Michael Bishop on being the fastest athlete of Masters age on the night, and to all other competitors on a great evening of racing.
A huge thank you must be extended to all the Officials and volunteers who lap scored, especially those who tirelessly endured doing so for two heats, and to the athletes from the first heat who graciously assisted with lap scoring the second. The evening couldn’t have run without you all.
As for photography on the night; phone cameras don’t handle darkness well at the best of times and with lighting conditions less than ideal, the images turned out better in black and white. It seems appropriate for an event held at Collingwood.
